Downtown Ft. Worth, mysterious face on building.

Look closely, and you can see what appears to be a face on this building.  Actually, it’s one of my favorite historical architectural details, the human head as an embellishment.  You can see it on courthouses in Dallas and Waxahachie.  The Driskill Hotel in Austin.  All over downtown Dallas and Ft. Worth.  And there is usually an interesting story behind the model for the face.

Why don’t architects use this detail anymore?  I think it’s because stonemasons and sculptors have been replaced by larger mechanized/automated operations.  No more room for personal touches.  What a disappointment.
